Caleb Sweazy is a full time, independent furniture maker. He specializes in large pieces — tables, cabinets — and is drawn to working with reclaimed wood (though he also uses new lumber). Caleb’s work — in his artistic creations and commissioned pieces — emphasizes the natural beauty of the wood. “Furniture is my main job and I feel very fortunate about that,” says Caleb. “ I also play music occasionally.” [Caleb is a singer and songwriter and has released several albums, most recently Lucky or Strong on the local Madjack Records label.]

Describe your path to becoming a maker. When I was 25, I lived in a tiny apartment. I had no furniture and no money. I decided to build myself some furniture so I bought a circular saw and some lumber. I had grown up around construction and both of my grandfathers were woodworking hobbyists so I had a certain comfort level with building.

What inspires your work? Everything inspires me. Sometimes it’s the shape or grain of a piece of wood. Sometimes it’s a building that I see. It can be a random shape or pattern I see.

Favorite thing about being a maker? Being self-employed is amazing. It’s also a creative outlet for me which is a necessity.

How does being a maker help you look at other artisan products? It gives me a respect for other people’s craft. I also think that creative people can help inspire each other. Hopefully we continue to move toward artisan goods and crafts and away from mass produced products.

Outside of your work, do you “make” anything else? I’m a songwriter and musician. And pie, I make pie. Seriously, you need to try my pies.

Most important lesson you’ve learned? With the tools I use, always pay attention. Always.
